On a little hill, surrounded by the harbour of Marmaris, sits the medieval castle that ancient historian Herodotus insists has been there for three thousand years. Certainly it is mentioned by a 18th Century writer, when referring to the 16th Century! The old town is huddled around the castle with its part-wooden houses, giving it a historical and quaint feel to wander around.

Although some of its architectural beauty was lost during the commercial tourism boom of the 1980’s, the villages of Marmaris are still stunningly beautiful, with its location surrounded by the rugged mountains, topped with splendid proud pine trees, the white sandy beaches of powdery fine grain and the warm clear waters, twinkling in the sunshine or at night in the light of the moon. There’s nowhere on the Earth quite like Marmaris. Not to slander the modern Marmaris, the city itself still has everything to suit the modern lifestyle, from bars and restaurants, an Irish pub (of course), shops, a water park and other facilities.

Springtime is very pleasant in Marmaris, winter tends to hold the summer’s heat, and the water is still warm right into January. In winter, it’s warm enough to still get a sun tan and the hotel prices are much cheaper than in the peak season! Summer is sizzling, long and dry, and very, very busy with tourists from all over Turkey and Europe, taking the opportunity to top up their tans and relax by the water. With temperatures peaking between forty and fifty degrees centigrade, it’s a roaster! The best time for visiting Marmaris is considered to be late spring, when the temperature is picking up, but the tourists are not yet out in number.

Marmaris Property | Icmeler Property

Marmaris is popular and therefore property in Marmaris is at a premium. A large luxury villa will cost anywhere in the region of two or three hundred thousand pounds. One can however buy land and develop it, but land is also highly priced in the area. However, for the more limited budget, apartments and flats sell between fifty and eighty thousand pounds and some smaller, four bedroom villas can be purchased for around one hundred thousand, although their swimming pools tend to be shared with neighbouring villas.

15 minutes by Dolmus (local bus service), or 10 minutes by car is the beautiful resort of Icmeler. Smaller than Marmaris, it has a reputation for being exclusive. Within the small town and along the beachfront promenade is a plethoria of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes, but all music finishes at midnight, making it ideal for families. Property prices in Icmeler are on the high side, but it is very popular with British property purchasers as well as other European holidaymakers.
