Don’t forget the excellent Turkish beer – and some more of the local wine. You can finish the day watching the sunset across the valley as you dine al fresco under the pergola with the stars above shining from a jet-black sky more brightly than anything you’ve seen at home. Ideal Location With shaded paths and cooler mountain air, the wooded slopes around the villa are a paradise for walkers. This is the ideal base for visiting the ancient Lycian cities scattered in ruins around the hilltops and valleys of the region. The high Turkish mountains are so close you could almost touch them, hiding many almost forgotten ancient Roman/Greek sites, as well as the superb rugged scenery of the Lycian peninsula; forest slopes cut with fast flowing rivers - notably the Xanthos - and deep gorges such as Saklikent. Nestling between coast and mountains, the villa is close to some of the best beaches in Turkey, such as Oludeniz and Patara. Sailing, diving and all other watersports are just 20mins away in Fethitye. And if you're looking for more energetic pursuits, you have a whole range of activities - from paragliding to river rafting - available right on your doorstep. Entering on the ground floor from the hall you will find a large open plan living /dining area. On this floor are also the entrances to a twin bedded room and an adjoining shower room / WC. The lounge has a wood burner fitted into the fireplace for those cooler evenings out of season. In the unlikely event that you've nothing better to do, satellite TV is installed, and the audio system will play your favorite DVDs and CDs. Double doors open from the lounge and dining areas onto a spacious balcony. The dining table seats six, and allows you to take your meals in the shade with the balcony doors wide open, appreciating the cooling breeze whilst admiring the fabulous view across the valley to the mountains beyond. The fully equipped fitted kitchen has timber units with oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, kettle and toaster. There is also a water cooler – delivery of large mineral water bottles can be arranged. A washing machine is installed in a small storage room on the lower floor. From the entrance hall, stairs lead down to two double bedrooms, both with king size beds, large wardrobes and drawers. Each bedroom on this floor has an en-suite shower room with WC and vanity units with cupboards under, plus a shaving point. Double doors from each bedroom lead onto the lower terrace. Ceramic tiled floors throughout and working shutters to all windows add to the cool feel of Villa Karatavuk. Reached by a timber staircase from the lounge the mezzanine floor has bookcases and seating for quiet reading, as well as a small study area with a desk. Sofa beds can accomodate an additional two guests if required. A wireless broadband connection is provided for internet access throughout the villa so you can keep on top of those emails if you really need to do so. You will need to provide your own notebook PC with wireless capabilitiy to make a connection, however. All rooms are air conditioned to keep you cool in summer, and the central heating system will keep you warm in the winter months. Uzumlu Village Life Wander down to Uzumlu village, just a few minutes walk from the villa, and watch the weavers producing the local "Dastar" fabric. Many of the houses have a loom and the women willingly show you how the intricate patterns are produced. You are likely to be offered something to eat or drink, this is Turkish hospitality. Of course they would like you to purchase a souvenir of your visit, but there's no pressure to buy. Don’t worry if your Turkish isn’t up to discussing the finer points of weaving; ’Merhaba’, a smile and sign language go a long way. There are a couple of good restaurants in Uzumlu, serving local specialities, and even the chance of some live music in the evening, played on the traditional Turkish stringed instrument, the "saz". Or if you have less time, pop in to the local snack bar for a ‘pide’, the Turkish equivalent to pizza. Shopping couldn't be easier - there are a number of shops in the village where all sorts of fresh food and other supplies can be had, including the excellent locally baked bread. At the weekly market in the main square, you will be astonished at the vast choice of fresh fruit, vegetables and spices on display. And all from local farmers who never had to go organic - because they always have been
